Did You Know? New Blood Test for Down Syndrome Women who are at-risk for having a child with Down syndrome should ask their doctor about a new blood test. The traditionally-used test, amniocentesis, has a risk to it. This blood test measures the presence of three substances that can indicate an elevated risk of Down Syndrome, although there is a ten to eleven percent possibility of a falsely low estimate. With more information known after the blood test, a woman can decide whether or not to proceed with the amniocentesis, which tests cells from the fluid around the fetus for abnormal chromosomes.
